MultiAuto connects only to Wi-Fi ELM327 adapters. Most connection problems come down to the adapter network, its local host and port, the ignition state, or the iOS Local Network permission.
Before you start
- Park safely, set the parking brake, and plug a Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port.
- Turn the ignition to ON. The engine usually does not need to be running to read stored codes.
- In iOS Settings › Wi-Fi, join the network created by the adapter. It is normal for this network to have no internet access.
- Open MultiAuto, confirm the host and port, and connect. For the Veepeak VP01, the defaults are
192.168.0.10and35000.
Local Network permission
MultiAuto asks for Local Network access only when connecting to a real Wi-Fi adapter. If access was denied, recover it in Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network by enabling MultiAuto. Demo mode works with zero permissions.
Common problems
- The app can't reach my Wi-Fi adapter
- First join the adapter's network in Settings › Wi-Fi. That network normally has no internet access, so an iOS warning is expected. Confirm the adapter is powered, then check the host and port in MultiAuto. The Veepeak VP01 default is 192.168.0.10 on port 35000; other Wi-Fi ELM327 adapters may use a different local endpoint.
- I denied Local Network access
- Open Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network, find MultiAuto, and turn access on. Then return to MultiAuto and connect again. This is the only permission the app requests, and it is needed only for a real Wi-Fi adapter connection.
- It reaches the adapter but not the car
- The phone can reach the adapter, but the adapter is not getting a usable response from the vehicle. Park safely, turn the ignition to ON, then unplug and firmly reseat the adapter. Some vehicles power the OBD-II port or respond to diagnostics only with the ignition on.
- How do I use demo mode?
- Turn on Demo mode from the Adapter screen and connect. It simulates a vehicle without a car, adapter, Wi-Fi network, or permission. Every simulated screen is clearly marked Demo so it cannot be mistaken for a real reading.
- A live value shows as unsupported
- Vehicles do not expose every standard PID. Unsupported means the vehicle did not report that requested value; MultiAuto shows that honestly instead of substituting zero.
- A trouble code has no description
- MultiAuto provides plain-English summaries for common stored codes. Manufacturer-specific meanings depend on the manufacturer's documentation, so the app shows the raw code and says a manufacturer-specific definition is required rather than inventing one.
- Should I leave the adapter plugged in?
- No. Many OBD-II ports remain powered when the vehicle is off, and a Wi-Fi adapter can drain the battery over time. Unplug it when you finish.
